Columbia falls in District Semi-Finals

Columbia's magical season has come to crashing finish as the Patrick Henry Patriots throttle the Raiders 56-15 at Don Paul Stadium in Fremont, Ohio in a Division V Region 18 Semifinal. You can listen to the replay online.

Patrick Henry scored early. Taking the opening kickoff, the Patriots drove 80 yards in six plays capped by senior quarterback Gabe Jones 7-yard touchdown run. The subsequent kickoff bounced off a Columbia player before Patrick Henry's Brandon Cole recovered. The Patriots struck again on the next play when Jones found Josh Petersen for a 37-yard touchdown pass.

Down 13-0 with 9:31 left in the first quarter and Columbia hasn't run a play from scrimmage.

Columbia got back in the game with a touchdown drive of their own. Starting at the their own one yard line after a punt, junior quarterback Jay Banyasz hit freshman Jesse Lambert with a 59-yard pass and catch on the first play of the drive. Banyasz then capped the seven-play, 99-scoring drive with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Austin Walaszewski to pull to within 13-7.

The rest of the first half belonged to Patrick Henry.

Senior running back Calvin Palmer capped the first quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run. Jones found junior Zach Nye for 78 yards and Hoops for 55 yard touchdowns. Palmer added an 8-yard scoring run in the 2nd quarter and a 15-yard touchdown run in the third. Senior fullback Adam Prigge got into the act with a 37-yard scoring dash.

At the half, Patrick Henry had a 49-7 lead gaining 505 yards of offense (228 rushing, 277 passing) on 16 first downs. Jones was nine of ten throwing the football for 277 yards and three touchdowns.

Columbia's Jay Banyasz finished the game 226 yards passing with two touchdowns and 53 yards rushing. Last week in the Raiders' win over Archbold, Banyasz was had 271 yards rushing with four touchdowns plus 168 yards passing and two scores.
