Black River at Grand Valley tonight

Black River and Grand Valley will tangle tonight in the opening round of the high school playoffs.

The Mustangs (9-1) qualified for the playoffs in 2015, hosting their first-ever home playoff game in program history. They lost that matchup to LaBrae in Week 11, 42-7.

Black River (7-3) needed a three-game winning streak to end the regular season to force its way into a playoff spot. The Pirates took second place in the Patriot Athletic Conference, Stars Division with a 3-2 record behind Buckeye, which made the playoffs in Division III, Region 9.

The Mustangs are looking to win the program’s first playoff game since the 1996 season, when the Mustangs advance all the way to the regional final round.

GV is Ashtabula County’s only playoff team for the second straight season and the area’s only postseason participant.

The winner of tonight's game with advance in the Division 5, Region 18 bracket facing the winner of Canton Central Catholic and Manchester.

Lorain wins on a historic night

Olentangy at Lorain tonight

Tonight will be the first high school football play-off game ever hosted by a Lorain city high school.  George Daniel Field will be the site of the historic event made possible by the Lorain Titans who finished the regular season at 8-2 and Lake Erie League Champions.

Lorain

Lorain High School was the result of the merger of Admiral King and Southview High Schools in 2010.  The Titans is their 7th year have reached the play-offs for the 2nd time in three seasons under Head Coach Dave McFarland - who was the head coach previously at Midpark, Oberlin and Elyria Catholic.

Lorain's season turned around when they rallied from a 15-point fourth-quarter hole to defeat previously unbeaten Sandusky 24-23 in week 7- that game started a streak of four straight wins over teams with winning records including a 14-13 win last week against Cleveland Heights.

Olentangy

The opposition for tonight's game are the Olentangy Braves who finished tied for 2nd in the Ohio Capital Conference.  Their Head Coach is Mark Solis who has been a high school football coach for 18 seasons including the last four with the Braves.  Solis' previously coaching stints include Ashland Crestview, Elyria, Twinsburg and was the Head Coach at Lorain in 2011 and 2012 compiling a 7-13 record.

The Braves are 7-3 (3-2 in the Ohio Capital Conference).  Their season highlight was a 52-51 victory in week 3 against Reynoldsburg in which Olentangy rallied from a 27 point 2nd half deficit to win.  More recently the Braves have won two straight.  Last week in a 28-21 win at Westerville Central, Olentangy jumped out to a 21-0 lead, gave up the lead, rallied late to win.

The winner of tonight's game with advance in the Division 1, Region 2 bracket facing the winner of Dublin Jerome and Findlay.

Lorain vs. Cleveland Hts tonight

The 2016 Lake Erie League title will be decided tonight when Lorain faces Cleveland Hts.

Lorain has a lot at stake - a victory would give the Titans:
  • First LEL title in school history - the first outright league championship in football for the city since the 1987 Admiral King team was the sole champion of the Erie Shore Conference
  • An 8-game winning streak - 1st in school history, 1st in city history
  • First home playoff game in school history in Division 1, Region 2

The Tigers are looking for their first LEL crown since 2013 and are battling for the 8th and final spot in Division 1, Region 1 - both would be firsts for coach Mac Stephens.

Lorain won their 7th game in a row last week destroying Bedford 42-7.  The running back duo of Carlos Chavis (178 rushing, TD) and Aaron Huff (108 rushing, 3 TDs) led the way on offense while the defense created six Bedford turnovers.

Cleveland Heights got back in the win column defeating Shaw 15-10. Senior quarterback Reggie Harris threw a TD pass while sophomore running back Xavier Pullar rushed for 133 yards on 16 carries including a 68-yard touchdown run.

Cleveland Hts. has won 4 of 5 meetings between the two schools. Lorain’s only win was in 2014.

Columbia runs past Fairview 40-15

Led by sophomore running back Brandon Coleman, the Columbia Raiders won convincingly 40-15 over the Fairview Warriors.

The match-up featured the two teams at the top of the Stripes Division of the Patriot Athletic Conference. With the win the Raiders (7-2, 4-0 PAC) are one win away from their 5th straight Stripes Division crown. The Warriors fall to 3-6 and 3-1 in the PAC.

Columbia raced out to a 21-0 lead in the 2nd quarter courtesy of Coleman's 5 TD run, Austin Sahlica 60 interception return and Lance Boise TD catch from quarterback Cody Schwartz.

Fairview got on the board when Josh Filkill found John McQuate along the Columbia sideline, then took it back toward the middle of the field and outraced the Columbia defense to the endzone. The Warriors was successful on their two point conversion when Filkill's jump pass was complete to a wide open Ryan Grealis.

On the next play from scrimmage, Fairview's Jack Provenza intercepted Schwartz and ran 35 yards to paydirt to get the Warriors closer 21-15 going into halftime.

After the break, Columbia took control of the game with two Coleman TD runs in the 3rd quarter. The first covered 70 yards in six plays and the second covered 41 yards in seven plays. All but one play were Coleman runs. After Fairview punted, Columbia put the game away. With Coleman on the bench, Mike Jacobucci took over at running back and then Schwartz threw his 2nd touchdown of the game finding Sahlica on and out route and turning upfield for a 59 yard touchdown.

Coleman finished with 245 yards rushing on 20 carries for a whooping 10 plus yards per attempt.

Midview holds off Olmsted Falls

The Midview Middies took the lead late, held on for dear life and escaped with a 28-21 win against Olmsted Falls.

Olmsted Falls was in a position to tie or win late in the game. After driving 62 yards in 18 plays in the final two minutes, the Bulldogs were denied on 4th and goal from the Midview 8 yard line. With two seconds left, quarterback Brett Hutkay's pass to Josh Jaeckin was knocked away by Luke Hunt.

A week after setting the Lorain County school record for passing yards, Midview senior quarterback Dustin Crum was responsible for four touchdowns on the evening. First he ran for two scores in the first half and finished with 183 yards rushing on 21 attempts. Throwing the ball, he was 12 for 23 for 155 yards and two TDs.

Olmsted Falls senior running back Spencer Linville led Olmsted Falls with 151 yards rushing on 24 carries including a TD and a 2 point conversion. QB Brett Hutkay chipped in with 78 yards on the ground and 72 through the air.

The Bulldogs down 7 to start the 4th quarter, denied the Middies on 4th down at their own 23 yard line. Olmsted Falls marched 67 yards in 12 plays to score with 5:11 left on a Hutkay QB sneak from a yard out on 4th and goal.

Midview responded. After Keith Johnson returned the kickoff to the Bulldog 33, Crum converted a 4th down and then found Johnson again on a bubble screen to score the go ahead touchdown with 2:05 left.

Midview has won 3 straight, 14 of 15 Southwestern Conference games and 4 straight vs. Olmsted Falls. With the win, the Middies remain one game behind Avon in the SWC.

Midview against Olmsted Falls tonight

Two schools just 10 miles apart hadn't really played each other much until the Southwestern and the West Shore Conference merged a couple of years ago. Now Midview and Olmsted Falls will play each other tonight for the 4th time in two years. Midview has won all three meetings.

Last year, the two teams met in week 7 and week 11. Both of those meetings were in Grafton, Ohio. Tonight, the scene shifts to Olmsted Falls and both teams find themselves with identical 5 and 1 records and a 4 and 1 mark in the Southwestern Conference.

Midview features a tremendous passing attack led by senior Dustin Crum (1426 passing yards, 16 TDs; 771 rushing yards, 5 TDs), Lorain County’s all-time leading passer. While Olmsted Falls is a running team with running backs Spencer Linville, Luke Lombardo and quarterback Brett Hutkay.

Midview has won two games in a row after defeating Westlake 35-14 last week. Olmsted Falls has won four straight including a 75-38 win over Berea-Midpark.

Both schools need a win tonight to keep pace with Avon in the SWC.

Avon spoils Lakewood's homecoming

Undefeated Avon started strong and never looked back in defeating Lakewood 42-6. With the victory, the Eagles remain all alone in first place in the Southwestern Conference.

Sophomore QB Ryan Maloy led a balanced attack in which Avon had 229 yards rushing and 169 passing for a total of 398.

Maloy started the scoring with a 29 TD run on Avon's first possession and then threw a 12 yard TD pass to Chris Mullins on the 2nd drive.

Lakewood responded with a TD of their own. Quentin Palmer ran it in from 7 yards out after Sean Wiggins put Lakewood in good field position with a 79 yard kick return. Avon responded with a Mason McLemore 5 yard TD run to close the first quarter.

Lakewood had their best drive of the game to start the 2nd quarter starting at their own 20 and reaching the Avon 19 before Eric Steinmetz intercepted QB Austin Mahar's pass on 4th down.

Avon put the game away in the 2nd quarter scoring twice on a screen pass to McLemore for a 43 yard touchdown and an Aaron Endrizal 4 yard run just before halftime.
