Avon visits Lakewood tonight

Avon and Lakewood are two teams in the Southwestern Conference who are polar opposites.

Avon is 5-0, Lakewood is 0-5. The Eagles have lost just 5 games in the last 4 years, The Rangers have won just 4 games in the last 4 years. Avon is rolling.

One week after beating Midview, the Eagles defeated Westlake 35 to 21. Senior running back Mason McLemore rushed for 241 yards and three touchdowns – the 2nd week in a row McLemore went over 200 yards on the ground.

Lakewood last week found themselves down 28-0 against North Olmsted at halftime before mounting their comeback but fell short 28-27. After Lakewood scored their final touchdown, Rangers went for the two-point conversion and the win but the pass fell incomplete and Lakewood lost by one point.

The two teams have met every year since 2012 with Avon winning each time.

Westlake scores late and wins a thriller

The Westlake Demons start the year 2-0 as they score late and defeat the Olmsted Falls Bulldogs 34-31 in the Southwestern Conference opener.

The winning score came on a Trevor Bielozer 20 yard touchdown reception from Trey Bialowas with two seconds remaining. The score capped a wild 4th quarter that saw both teams trading touchdowns. Olmsted Falls had all of the momentum after scoring three straight times to take a 24-20 lead late in the 3rd quarter. Westlake executed a fake punt on 4th and 4 from their own 41 yard line and Q'darr Robinson ran 16 yards to give Westlake new life and capping the drive was a 5 yard touchdown pass from Trey Bialowas to Conner Steneckert.

Olmsted Falls rallied themselves. Three time facing 4th down, the Bulldogs converted all three times driving 65 yards in 15 plays to take the lead 31-27 with a 24 yard TD pass from Brett Hutkay to Andrew Turski with 37 seconds left.

After a pooch kick, the Demons took over at their own 48 yard line and drove the final 52 yards to take the lead for good when Bialowas found Bielozer over the middle.

The game looked as if Westlake was going to roll taking a 20-3 lead in the 2nd quarter. Bialowas had two rushing TDs and a passing TD to Billy Blood. The Bulldog running game came alive late in the 2nd quarter and into the 3rd as Spencer Linville scored twice in the 3rd quarter on his way to a 35 carry, 215 yard performance.

The Demons have four straight games dating back to last season and start 2-0 for the first time since 2012 which was the last year Westlake made the play-offs. Prior to last night's game, the Bulldogs have defeated Westlake 22 of 23 times. Westlake Head Coach Jason Hall recorded his 100th coaching win over his 15 year career (Southeast, Brush, Nordonia and Massilion).

Next week is Westlake's home opener vs. Avon Lake while the Bulldogs go on the road for the first time against Lakewood.

Westlake at Olmsted Falls tonight

The Southwestern Conference has had membership changes in recent years.  Among them is expanding to ten schools and forcing each school to play nine conference games against the other members.

For the Westlake Demons and the Olmsted Falls Bulldogs, these are two schools who represent the old guard.
